Finding more sustainable methods of cooling and heating, the aim of the MolCal project

The Doctoral Network MolCal (Molecule-based magneto/electro/mechano-Calorics) project will hire ten Doctoral Candidates to develop their research on caloric materials and energy conversion technologies for cooling and heating applications. Academic and non-academic leaders, from leading research institutions in Europe and beyond, will expose the Doctoral Candidates to multidisciplinary and multisectoral training in chemistry, materials science, physics, device development and cross-disciplinary training activities.

The application period for candidates will be two months, from 19 February to 21 April. Applicants must complete a form and attach the required documentation via the apply.molcal.eu website.

MolCal’s research is of strategic relevance since temperature control systems are currently responsible for about half of the EU’s energy consumption, making it important to find alternative methods of cooling and heating. The project will study caloric materials that fall under the umbrella of molecule-based materials and can respond to different stimuli, whether magnetic, electrical and/or mechanical, being a novel approach.

MolCal is coordinated by Marco Evangelisti, CSIC researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), a joint institute of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the University of Zaragoza. In addition to CSIC, other members of the consortium are: University of Crete, University of Bielefeld, University of Seville, University of Paris-Saclay, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), University of Edinburgh, University of Zaragoza, Technical University of Eindhoven and the companies Sunamp, Quantum Design, Lake Shore Cryotronics and BSH Electrodomésticos España, S.A.

The €2,600,000 project is funded by the European Union through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) within the Horizon Europe Programme, whose main objective is to support the training and professional development of research personnel worldwide, and the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
