The new Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA), aspires to become one of the reference centers in Nanoscience and Materials in Spain. The Microdevices Engineering Technical Unit (UTIM) has been created with the aim of improving the level of technological maturity (TRL) of the microdevices that are being developed at the institute. The unit will manufacture the devices derived from the projects and will integrate them with the mechanical and electronic parts necessary for their operation, taking them to a level of development that can be transferred to the industry. That is, go from a TRL 2 or 3 to a TRL of at least 4 or 5.
Several services are grouped under the UTIM: manufacture of microdevices, systems integration and technical office.
For manufacturing, the unit has access to equipment located in the clean room of the Laboratorio de Microscopías Avanzadas (Optical Lithography, RIE, Ion Milling, electroplating, double beam, microcontacts, chemical attack benches). In addition, it collaborates with other services of the Institute and the University of Zaragoza (UZ) such as the precision mechanics service or the scientific instrumentation service of the UZ, all of them integrated into the Research Support Services (SAI).
The potential users of the service are all researchers from the institute, which currently has more than 150 doctoral researchers, 6 ERC projects and more than 40 European projects. In this scenario, numerous ideas are generated that could be converted into industrial products.
