The Pyrenees are filled with science at the V Semana de la Ciencia del Valle de Benasque
The Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA) and the Instituto de Síntesis Química y Catálisis Homogénea (ISQCH), joint institutes between the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR), the Asociación Benasque Conciencia and the Pedro Pascual Science Centre, are organising the V Semana de la Ciencia del Valle de Benasque, which will take place from 15th to 19th November at the Pedro Pascual Science Centre in Benasque and which this year will focus its activities on “Space, the last frontier”.
This informative initiative originated in 1991 in France, when Hubert Curien, the French Minister of Research, decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Ministry by opening its gardens to the public in order to bring science and researchers closer to the public. The European Science Week has been held every year since 1993 and has been organised in Spain on a national basis since 2001.
The inauguration of the event will take place on Tuesday 15 November at 19:00 hours and will feature the inaugural lecture by Carlos Pobes, INMA researcher, who will give a lecture entitled: “Studying the Universe with neutrinos from the South Pole”.
The week will feature a photographic exhibition developed by the CSIC “The Universe for you to discover”, consisting of four large blocks: solar system, stars and nebulae, galaxies and Universe. The exhibition aims to bring astronomy closer to the general public through images obtained with satellites and telescopes located in different countries.
During the week there will be practical activities aimed at students from Primary to High School, including science experiments, digital planetariums and the celebration of a Hi Score Science contest, a quiz game about science, in Spanish and English, for mobile devices, iOS and Android, and PC, Mac and Linux available in Apple Store and Play Store, awarded at international, national and regional level, which tries to bring science to the world of the youngest based on video games and new technologies.
The general public and visitors to the Valley will be able to enjoy informative conferences at the highest level such as “Life in Space” – Pablo L. Finkel, Robot Pepper (ITA)- Esther Borao, Director of ITAINNOVA, or “Peering into the origins of the Universe with the James Webb space telescope – Bruno Rodríguez del Pino and Javier Álvarez, entertaining informative conferences by José María Fraile, Director of ISQCH, and José María de Teresa, researcher at INMA, theatre (Midnight Gospel), night-time observations led by the Agrupación Astronómica de Huesca, documentaries and scientific debates.
The V Semana de la Ciencia en Benasque is supported by the Vice-Presidency of Scientific Culture of the CSIC, the town councils of Benasque, Sahún, Sesué and Villanova, the Astronomical Association of Huesca, the Fabres bakery, Disnoguero, Las Tucas the mindkind and ITAINNOVA butchers and the Delegation of the CSIC in Aragon.
