Workshop on Materials with Advanced Functionalities for the New Technological Transformation

From 5 to 7 September, all the members of the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, including scientific, technical and management staff, will meet at the Palacio de Congresos de Albarracín (Teruel) in order to exchange knowledge and create new synergies.

During the three-day meeting, the different lines of research, units, services and commissions of the institute will be presented. The sessions will be complemented with activities of dynamisation, generation of ideas and collaborative projects between the research groups. These sessions will be coordinated by the UAB Research Park (PRUAB). In addition, there will be three guest lectures. The first will be given by Eugenio Coronado, who will present the Advanced Materials Complementary Plan “Materials with advanced functionalities for the new technological transformation: Integration and collaboration actions”, of which he is the scientific coordinator. The second will be given by Carmen Sanabria and Alberto Sereno, who will present their experience in public management in science, new strategies and good practices. Finally, Ramón Torrecillas will talk about public-private collaboration in science. Taking advantage of the superb environment of Albarracín, the conference is complemented by guided tours that seek to facilitate the rapprochement between INMA staff in a relaxed atmosphere.

The meeting was made possible thanks to the co-financing of the Materials with advanced functionalities programme for the new technological transformation of the Advanced Materials area, included in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, and has been supported by the Santa María de Albarracín Foundation, which facilitates the use of its facilities and offers guided tours.

The INMA was created in July 2020 as a result of the merger of two research institutes, with a competitive and consolidated track record: the Institute of Materials Science of Aragon (ICMA) and the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon (INA), both pioneers in Materials Science as well as in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Spain.

With more than 35 years of experience in materials research by ICMA, and almost 18 years of expertise in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology by INA, INMA researchers have achieved today a strong internationally recognised leadership in their specific fields of interest. Taking into account the previous intertwined background in several areas of knowledge such as Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Biotechnology, INMA researchers now have an ambitious common goal: to be a key player in the national and international landscape of advanced materials and nanotechnology.

The R&D&I activities are based on the multidisciplinary character of INMA, which includes expertise in Materials Theory, Synthesis of molecular and supramolecular materials, polymer chemistry, photonics, magnetism, superconductivity, quantum technologies, additive manufacturing, biotechnology, electronics and Nanotechnology. Basic and applied research is carried out by attracting resources mainly from national and international public funded programmes, but also through collaborations with industry. In addition, INMA has a very strong relationship with unique research infrastructures such as the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (LMA) in UNIZAR, whose Director and the three heads of areas are reference researchers of INMA; and with large national and international infrastructures such as neutron sources and synchrotron radiation, where INMA researchers participate in the development of unique instruments for the characterisation of materials.
