José María de Teresa, finalist in the Ciencia en Acción outreach competition
The physicist José María de Teresa, CSIC researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, and director of the Dual Beam Area of the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (LMA), has been chosen as a finalist in the Science in Action popular science contest, in the Science, Engineering and Values category.
The video A musical and scientific approach to the micro- and nano-technology of cochlear implants, funded by the LMA and available for viewing on the YouTube channels of the LMA and INMA, shows how the technology helps to restore the sense of hearing. José María de Teresa and musicians Roberto Álvarez and Kseniia Vokhmianina of the Singapore Philharmonic Orchestra, along with other volunteers, combine their expertise in music, science and technology to explain in an educational way a major problem for many people: hearing loss, which is the third most prevalent chronic disease in older people.
Another work by De Teresa has also won an award in the same competition. His article “Avances en microtecnologías y en inteligencia artificial podrían hacer la neurotecnología disruptiva”, published in the journal ConCiencias de la Facultad de Ciencias de Zaragoza, has been classified in second place in the category Trabajos De Divulgación Científica, obtaining an Honourable Mention.
Ciencia en Acción is an international competition aimed at students, teachers, researchers and disseminators of the scientific community in the Ibero-American geographic area, in any of its disciplines. Its main objective is to present science in an attractive and motivating way, so that young people and the general public become interested in it and, throughout the competition, enjoy attending the conferences, observing and participating in the fair and, the most enthusiastic ones, going up to the great experience.
The Ciencia en Acción final will take place from 27-29 October 2023 in Viladecans, Barcelona.
