The 59th edition of the National Congress of the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass (SECV) was successfully held from 11 to 14 June at the Faculty of Education of the University of Zaragoza. This event, which, in this edition, has returned to the face-to-face format, brought together more than 170 professionals, researchers and experts, from public bodies and private companies, in ceramics and glass from all over Spain and abroad.
The aim of this congress is to promote technical progress in the ceramics and glass industries and to stimulate their growth and improvement through basic and applied scientific research and the dissemination of scientific, technical and artistic knowledge in these fields. It also aims to encourage the teaching of ceramics and glass in Spain.
During the different sessions, the application of this field of research in areas as diverse as energy, sustainability, environment, health, construction and heritage has been discussed.
The Opening Ceremony was conducted by Miguel Galindo, president of the SECV; Pilar Pina, deputy director of the Aragon Nanotechnology and Materials Institute, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza; Javier Campo, representing the CSIC and Spanish representative at the Institute of Langevin of the Ministry of Science and Innovation; and Rosa Isabel Merino, CSIC researcher at INMA and organizer of the Congress Committee. To conclude, Julio Latorre, Dean of the Faculty of Education of the University of Zaragoza, dedicated a few words to the attendees.
The Organising Committee, composed of researchers from the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR), together with the SECV management, has offered an agenda with a selection of high-level plenary lectures, symposia, and various social activities, all designed to encourage interaction and knowledge exchange among attendees.
During the four days of the congress, participants were able to enjoy enriching academic sessions and a series of special activities organised by the committee, such as a Spanish welcome wine, city tours and a gala dinner, offering a complete and diverse experience to all congress participants. On the other hand, the IV Prize for the best SECV doctoral thesis was awarded to Segundo Manuel Shagñay from the Carlos III University of Madrid for the work Durability of eco-friendly alternative materials to Portland cement, directed by Dr. Manuel Torres and Dr. María Asunción Bautista.
The photography prize was awarded to Irene Díaz Herrezuelo and Manuel Belmonte for SEM micrograph of sodium nitrate salt infiltrated in the lamellar microstructure of vermiculite, resembling muscle tissue.
On the other hand, the Student Speech Contest was held, the winner of which will represent the SECV at the next congress of the European Ceramic Society (EcerS) to be held in Dresden in 2025. The winner was Carla Arca who is working on her doctoral thesis at the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya under the direction of Mari Pau Ginebra.
The Organising Committee and the SECV have expressed their gratitude to the SECV sections and partners for the organisation of the symposia and to the collaborators who have supported this event, and encourage everyone to continue presenting their work in future editions of the congress.
This 59th edition has reaffirmed the position of the SECV National Congress as a key event for the scientific and technical community of ceramics and glass in Spain, consolidating its position as an essential platform for the exchange of ideas and the promotion of advances in these fields.
