Researchers Víctor Sebastián and Alberto Concellón, among the winners at the 13th edition of the Aragón Investiga Awards

Alberto Concellón, Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of Zaragoza at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (CSIC-Unizar), has received the Aragón Investiga Award for Young People “Blanca Catalán de Ocón”. This category is intended to recognise young researchers under 35 years of age at the date of publication of the call. The prize will be awarded considering not only the scientific achievements, but also the importance and potential of the lines undertaken by the researcher.

The ‘Ramón y Cajal’ award for relevant research in the category of Health, Biotechnology and Biomedicine has gone to the publication ‘Nanoengineering Palladium Plasmonic Nanosheets Inside Polymer Nanospheres for Photothermal Therapy and Targeted Drug Delivery’, a work led by Víctor Sebastián Cabeza, a researcher at the University of Zaragoza at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, and Manuel Arruebo, a researcher at the University of Zaragoza’s INMA, in which they show nanocapsules that simultaneously contain drugs and palladium foils so that, by means of light stimuli, they can eliminate tumour cells or activate the controlled release of these drugs. The research work has been published on the cover of the prestigious journal Advanced Functional Materials (Wiley-VCH). In addition to Víctor Sebastián and Manuel Arruebo, the following have participated in this study: Raúl Arenal (ARAID researcher at INMA, leader of the Nanoscopy on Low Dimensional Materials (NLDM) group at INMA, and together with Víctor Sebastián, member of the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (LMA), University of Zaragoza), Laura Usón, Cristina Yus, Silvia Irusta and Teresa Alejo (INMA researchers), Gracia Mendoza (researcher at IIS Aragón), David García-Domingo (Instituto Aragonés de Ciencias de la Salud (IACS) and Eric Leroy (member of the Institut de Chimie et et des Matériaux Paris-Est (ICMPE), CNRS/UPEC, Thiais (France))

The award ceremony took place on 22 November 2023, at the Fundación Caja Rural de Aragón in Zaragoza.
