Populariser Sonia Fernández Vidal invites the people of Aragon to a “quantum coffee” at the Centro de Historias in Zaragoza
The scientist and writer, recognised as one of the hundred most creative people in the world according to Forbes magazine, will bring quantum physics to the general public tomorrow in a meeting open to the public
Zaragoza, 23 September. The “Quantum Autumn” promoted by the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute (INMA), a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, is experiencing one of its most eagerly awaited moments with the lecture by Sonia Fernández Vidal, one of the most renowned voices in scientific dissemination in Spain.
With a PhD in Quantum Physics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Sonia Fernández Vidal has carried out her research work at internationally renowned centres such as CERN (Switzerland), Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA) and the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona. Recognised by Forbes magazine as one of the 100 most creative people, she is the author of best-selling books such as La puerta de los tres cerrojos (The Door with Three Locks), Quantic Love and Desayuno con partículas (Breakfast with Particles), which have brought science closer to thousands of readers around the world. Her ability to combine scientific rigour and narrative has made her one of the most influential communicators on the international scene.
Now, the people of Zaragoza have the opportunity to enjoy one of her lectures with a “quantum talk” given by Sonia Fernández Vidal tomorrow, 24 September, entitled: “A quantum coffee, what is reality?”. It will take place at 7 pm at the Centro de Historias in Zaragoza and is intended for all audiences.
A bridge between science and society
The “Quantum Autumn” organised by the Aragon Institute of Nanoscience and Materials (CSIC-Unizar) aims to show that our region is a territory with first-rate scientific talent, capable of leading cutting-edge research in the so-called second quantum revolution. In addition, it is still possible to visit the exhibition on this topic at the Centro de Historias in Zaragoza, which has extended its opening until 1 October. From that date onwards, the exhibition will travel to Huesca (Palacio de Villahermosa) from 3 October to 28 October, and to the CEFCA in Teruel from 30 October to 14 November. The exhibition can also be seen at the CSIC Delegation in Aragon during Science Week, from 4 to 10 November.
‘Quantum cinema’ cycle in November
This programme of activities is part of UNESCO’s declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Physics and Technologies, and reinforces the role of INMA as a centre of reference, following its accreditation as a Severo Ochoa centre of excellence.
Quantum cinema series in November

In addition, among other activities, a “quantum cinema” cycle is planned at the Zaragoza Film Library between 13 and 16 November, with titles such as “Copehhaguen”, “Lost Highway”, “Coherence and Flatland” and “Run, Lola, Run”. Each film will be introduced by scientists from the institute.
INMA: Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence
In 2024, the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA) became the first research centre in the region to receive accreditation as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence. This recognition entails funding of €4,500,000 and the awarding of five pre-doctoral contracts for the period 2024-2028, in addition to the ten that were awarded in the previous call for applications.
INMA has an integrative approach that translates research into nanomaterials into solutions for society’s challenges. The institute currently has around 300 members and more than 40 European projects underway. It publishes an average of 300 papers per year and has obtained €7 million in competitive public funding.
In addition to having created numerous technology-based companies, four of which are active, it has 15 valid patents, five of which are licensed. INMA works closely with industry. All this provides around one million euros in annual revenue.
