Chateando con la Ciencia: Juan F. Jimeno

Chateando con la Ciencia: What do economists do? Economic and social challenges of the 21st century” – Thursday 17th November

On Thursday 17th November a new session of the VII edition of the Cycle of colloquia “Chateando con la Ciencia” will take place, organised by the Real Zaragoza Club de Tenis with the collaboration of the nstituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (CSIC-University of Zaragoza) with the conference of Juan Francisco Jimeno Serrano, Advisor to the Directorate General of Economics, Statistics and Research of the Bank of Spain and Associate Professor at the University of Alcalá.

Abstract: Economics has always been a very controversial science. The media tends to communicate it as a battlefield where ideological arguments are settled. Thus, the public does not receive enough information about important issues that influence their daily decisions, be they economic, financial or of any other kind.

In reality, like any other science, economists are in the business of finding, analysing and interpreting data to try to better understand how the world works. And being a social science, it has a moral or normative component: we want to understand how the world works in order to improve it.

As an example of “what economists do”, the conference will address two issues that are shaping, and will continue to shape, the socio-economic context of the 21st century: demographic changes and scientific and technological advances. Both have wide-ranging economic and social implications, from their impact on the labour market and their implications for social policies to the consequences for future economic growth. The measurement, analysis and interpretation of these phenomena from the perspective of economists will be the subject of discussion and debate at the conference.

Juan Francisco Jimeno Serrano holds a degree in Economics from the University of Alcalá and a PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). He is currently an advisor to the Directorate General Economics, Statistics and Research at the Bank of Spain and an associate professor at the University of Alcalá de Henares. He is also an associate researcher at CEMFI (Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros), CEPR (Center for Economic Policy Research) and IZA (Institute for the Study of Labor). Between articles, book chapters and books, he has more than 100 publications on economic issues in numerous national and international academic journals. His main lines of research are in the fields of macroeconomics, labour economics and public economics.
