José María de Teresa, CSIC Research Professor at the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute.
Talk in the context of Chateando con la Ciencia: ‘Manufacturing the chips of the future’.
Summary: At the end of January, the share price of large US technology companies collapsed when the Chinese company DeepSeek managed to successfully train a model of Artificial Intelligence with cheaper microchips. For three years after the start of the COVID pandemic, car factories frequently had to stop production because of a lack of microchips. The Taiwan Strait is one of the hottest spots on the planet because China wants to take control of the island and the United States wants to protect the production of microchips. These three news items already hint at the strategic and geopolitical importance of microchip manufacturing. The first part of this informative talk will review the history of microchips, their manufacturing method, their main applications, and the companies and people who have made possible the development of the technology that has had the greatest impact on the way we live today. In the second part of the talk, I will present the research line developed by the Nanomidas group in the field of nanofabrication, for which we use equipment equipped with focused electron and ion.
