NanoRural: scientific dissemination in rural Spain
NanoRural is a scientific dissemination project of the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), a joint centre between the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, to bring science to rural areas in a fun, educational and accessible way. To this end, INMA is bringing a small travelling fair designed for all audiences and with a large number of scientific demonstrations that include materials with shape memory, liquid crystals, magnetic fields or light polarisers, which bring the materials of the future closer to those attending.
This project is especially focused on towns with less than 500 inhabitants in rural areas of Aragon, which are usually far from this type of activity. So far, 18 Aragonese towns have been visited, including rural schools and secondary schools such as IES Gallicum in Zuera, IES Tubacaín in Tarazona and IES Sabina Albar in Bujaraloz. During this summer, fairs have been organised in the regions of Sierra de Albarracín (Teruel), Monegros (Huesca/Zaragoza) and soon in Campo de Borja (Zaragoza), Sobrarbe (Huesca) and Somontano de Barbastro (Huesca), as well as in other localities of Cinco Villas (Zaragoza), Ribagorza (Huesca) and Maestrazgo (Teruel).
The successful project, which has many localities on the waiting list, is led by Andrés Seral, INMA researcher, and has the collaboration of the General Foundation of the CSIC, through the Science Account call and the H2020 programme of the European Commission, through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie individual fellowship (HeriCare project, 840375 , for the development of antimicrobial nanomaterials to protect cultural heritage).
