Larry Falvello, INMA researcher, named Fellow of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA)
Larry Falvello, a researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (a joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza), has been recognised as a Fellow of the American Crystallographic Association (ACA), a non-profit scientific organisation with more than a thousand members in more than thirty-five countries. The ACA has created an annual programme of excellence, “Fellows”, to reward members whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of crystallography or its applications are scientifically or socially distinguished.
Larry R. Falvello, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Zaragoza and researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (CSIC-University of Zaragoza), is a key player in crystallography since this technique became essential in the resurgence of inorganic chemistry and the development of organometallic chemistry. Its research programme includes the synthesis of novel coordination compounds, and studies of their physical properties and dynamics in the crystalline state. The ACA has highlighted not only the scientific value of his outstanding research work, but also his value as an enthusiastic and patient educator, and his ability to convey his knowledge in a way that is understandable to experts and non-experts alike.
Larry Falvello holds a PhD in Chemistry from Cambridge University, England, and has trained dozens of crystallographers. After ten years working at Texas A&M University (USA), under the guidance of F. A. Cotton, who already highlighted Larry’s role in the laboratory and as an educator, “he was a wonderful teacher and taught everyone” says Cotton, in 1991 he arrived in Zaragoza to join the Institute of Materials Science of Aragon, now the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon, and the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Zaragoza. In addition to developing his research programme in Structural Chemistry, he is the main editor of the journal Acta Crystallographica, Section C. He is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Section E, and a member of the IUCr Publications Commission and of the CIF Dictionary Management Group. As an editor, they indicate at the ACA, Larry also shows his love and skill in mentoring; he is kind and patient with authors and is willing to help them with their efforts, especially the younger ones.
In 2018, Larry Falvello was awarded the Gold Medal of the Faculty of Science of the Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in the Slovak city of Košice. This distinction was awarded to him thanks to the development of a doctoral thesis programme co-supervised by the University of Zaragoza and the University of Košice, the second largest town in Slovakia.
