Webinar: “Cochlear implants and Godard’s waltz for flute and piano”
Next February 22nd, at 12h, will take place the webinar entitled “Cochlear implants and Godard’s waltz for flute and piano”, a musical and scientific approach to the micro- and nano-technology of cochlear implants by the CSIC researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza and Director of the Micro- and Nanofabrication (Dual-Beam) and Characterisation Area of the Laboratorio de Microscopías Avanzadas (LMA), José María de Teresa.
The MULTI-MUST initiative (MULTIdisciplinar initiative on MUsic, Science and Technology) is a multidisciplinary approach that combines music, science and technology. In this video, physicist José María de Teresa and musicians from the Singapore Philharmonic Orchestra Roberto Álvarez (flutist) and Kseniia Vokhmianina (pianist), together with other volunteers, have combined their expertise in music, science and technology to explain in a pedagogical way an important problem for many people: hearing loss. First, the video shows how science and technology contribute to restoring this sense, which is so important for human communication, using the case of cochlear implants, which are electronic devices that electrically excite the acoustic nerve. Cochlear implants end in a plastic tube that is inserted into the cochlea. This tube contains electrodes that electrically excite the acoustic nerve and allow a translation of sound information to the brain. The video below shows a recording of Godard’s waltz for flute and piano, both original and modified to illustrate common hearing problems.
José María de Teresa is CSIC Research Professor at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA, a joint institute of CSIC and the University of Zaragoza. After obtaining his PhD at the University of Zaragoza, he held postdoctoral positions at IFW-Dresden and CNRS-Paris. He coordinates the Spanish Nanolithography network and chairs the Board of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society. His main research interests are focused electron/ion beam nanofabrication and its application to nanoelectronics, magnetic and superconducting materials.
The session will be introduced by Conrado Rillo, Director of the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute, INMA (CSIC-UNIZAR), Pilar Cea, Director of the Advanced Microscopy Laboratory, LMA (UNIZAR) and the flutist Roberto Álvarez from Singapore.
The session, which will take place on 22 February at 12 noon, can be attended in person in the Salón de Actos del Edificio I+D+I del Campus Río Ebro de la Universidad de Zaragoza and on-line through the following Zoom link: https://bit.ly/3YOr5rK.
