Chronic wounds, severe burns and diabetic foot ulcers represent immense medical challenges, often leading to prolonged suffering, high healthcare costs and worsening due to persistent infection and impaired healing. Tirecat Health, a pioneering spin-off company originating from the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and CSIC, is directly confronting these issues.
Our groundbreaking approach leverages bioinspired polymer nanomembranes, a technology developed by the Nanostructured Functional Materials Group. Inspired by the extraordinary adhesive properties of mussels, these innovative materials are engineered to act as sophisticated scaffolds that firmly adhere to tissue, even in wet conditions. Crucially, they not only accelerate tissue regeneration but also exhibit inherent antimicrobial properties to actively prevent infection, a critical factor in successful wound healing.
In this “Thursday’s NanoSpin-Off” talk, I will delve into the science behind our nanotechnology-based approach, discussing how our customizable membranes can revolutionize wound care. We will highlight our technology designed for burns and ulcers and share insights into our journey from lab concept to preclinical success, as we prepare for upcoming clinical trials.
