Lecture: “New models for fabrication and actuation of living electronic interfaces”
On 26 February 2026, the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA) is organising a scientific session led by Claudia Tortiglione, from the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems “Eduardo Caianiello”-CNR (Italy).
Talk summary: The unmatchable capability of living cells to fabricate complex structures from simple building blocks offers new paradigms for seamlessly integrating electronic structures into living matter to create hybrid devices. In this talk, an overview of recent results using the freshwater polyp Hydra vulgaris as a model organism will be presented.
Through simple exposure to conjugated oligomers, this organism has demonstrated the ability to fabricate conducting microstructures in specific cell types, powered by endogenous enzymatic activity. Furthermore, the discussion will cover the production of fluorescent and conductive microfibers embedded within tissues, showing the feasibility of using these organisms as ‘biofactories’ to manufacture and test novel bioelectronic interfaces.
This approach to biocompatible electronics manufactured in vivo in localised regions may inspire new bioengineering concepts, allowing for the manipulation of biological functions by augmenting conductivity with spatiotemporal control in both physiological and pathological contexts.
