INMA seminar: Subha R. Das, from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU, USA)

On 4th Sep. 2026, the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute (INMA) will host the talk Engineered extracellular vesicles & nucleic acid-polymer hybrid nanomaterials – Therapeutic targeting and automated science, given by Prof. Subha R. Das, of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU, USA).

Prof. Das is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at CMU and a member of the Center for Nucleic Acids Science & Technology (CNAST), where his laboratory develops nucleic acid and polymer-based tools for nanobiotechnology and therapeutic delivery applications. His academic background includes an M.Sc. in Chemistry and a B.Eng. in Computer Science from BITS Pilani, India, a Ph.D. from Auburn University, and postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

His research group has pioneered nucleic acid-polymer hybrids (NAPHs), built by incorporating atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) initiators at defined sites within DNA and RNA. This platform has been extended to oligonucleotide systems exploiting G-quadruplex structures and aptamers for rapid, modular surface engineering of extracellular vesicles (EVs), achieving targeted therapeutic delivery without the need for cellular engineering. This work, published in journals such as ACS Nano, PNAS and Biomacromolecules, has been licensed to Coya Therapeutics for clinical translation.

Beyond his research, Dr Das directs the CMU Automated Science Lab education programme, integrating cloud-based robotic experimentation and machine learning into research and teaching. He is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications and holds multiple patents in nucleic acid chemistry and polymer hybrids for nanobiotechnology.
