INMA Impulso: Thomas Hermans, from IMDEA Nanociencia
Seminar: Dissipative self-assembly & wall-less fluidics
Speaker: Thomas Hermans, Senior Research Professor at IMDEA Nanociencia. Dr Hermans has a distinguished international career (TU Eindhoven, Northwestern University, Université de Strasbourg) and is a recipient of prestigious grants such as ERC and Caixa Health, having also driven the creation of two start-up companies.
What will the talk cover? The seminar will focus on two innovative research strands:
- Dissipative self-assembly: An exploration of chemical reaction networks that generate emergent behaviours, such as supramolecular size oscillations and travelling polymerisation.
- Wall-less fluidics: The presentation of a new paradigm of magnetically levitated “liquid tubes” using ferrofluids. This technology eliminates solid walls, reducing drag by between 60% and 99%, with revolutionary applications in flow chemistry and blood pumping.
Event details:
- Date: 11th March 2026.
- Time: 12:00.
- Venue: Conference Room (Sala de Conferencias), R&D&I (I+D+I) Building, Campus Río Ebro.
Organised by: The Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA), CSIC and the University of Zaragoza.
