INMA Coloquio: “The magic of Moiré quantum matter”

The Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon (INMA) is delighted to invite you to an upcoming colloquium featuring one of the most prominent figures in contemporary physics: Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero.

  • Date: 5 February 2026.
  • Time: 12:00.
  • Venue: Aula Magna, Faculty of Science (San Francisco Campus), University of Zaragoza.
  • In collaboration with: The Advanced Microscopy Laboratory (LMA).

About the speaker

Pablo Jarillo-Herrero currently holds the Cecil and Ida Green Professorship in Physics at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). His scientific career reached a historic milestone in 2018 when his group became the first to observe superconductivity in bilayer graphene rotated at a precise “magic angle” of 1.1 degrees. This revolutionary discovery, published in the journal Nature, gave rise to the field of ‘twistronics’ and has earned him prestigious international accolades, such as the 2020 Wolf Prize and, more recently, the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award.

Talk summary

Under the title “The Magic of Moiré Quantum Matter”, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will address the challenge of understanding quantum materials where electrons interact strongly. During the session, he will review the foundations of this new experimental platform, which allows for the investigation of fascinating quantum phases, such as:

  • Superconductivity.
  • Correlated insulators.
  • Magnetism and ferroelectricity.

The presentation will conclude with a perspective on future directions and the potential of this emerging field in condensed matter physics.

Note: This activity is supported by the Severo Ochoa Excellence grant and the collaboration of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
