INMA Coloquio: Carlos Alejaldre
Next Friday, April 1, will be a new session of the seminar series INMA Coloquio. This initiative, organised by the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (CSIC-Universidad de Zaragoza), aims to bring the research staff of Aragon to leading international references in various and very current topics of scientific interest, as for its expected impact on our future as a society.
The session will be given by Carlos Alejaldre, Director General of CIEMAT.
The conference entitled “Energy and fusion: Science or fiction?” will take place on Friday 1 April at 12 noon. The session will take place in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Science of the University of Zaragoza and can be followed through the Zoom platform https://zoom.us/j/97604589214?pwd=aWtULzVVbDFBWmZKNS9YQ2ZpVFBMQT09 (Meeting ID: 976 0458 9214, Access code: 972591).
Summary of the talk:
Due to its environmental potential, economic potential and safety reasons, light nuclei fusion is one of the few possible options to supply uninterrupted, long-term and massive energy to the world’s growing population. The spectacular progress made by the scientific and technological community in understanding the physics underlying fusion processes and the technology to implement them has prompted a roadmap in Europe aimed at building a prototype nuclear fusion power plant called DEMO, as a stepping stone to the commercialisation of this energy source. In this talk, in addition to the latest results obtained in the experimental field of fusion, the situation, progress and challenges of the two pillars on which the European roadmap is based will be presented: the ITER Project under construction in the south of France in an unprecedented collaboration between China, Korea, the United States, Europe, India, Japan and Russia, and the IFMIF-DONES neutron source to be installed in Granada. All this demonstrates that fusion as an energy source deserves to go from being considered science fiction to an achievable reality.
