Chateando con la Ciencia: Pablo García de Frutos, from the Barcelona Institute for Biomedical Research: “Can a vitamin help us age better?”
🧬 Can a vitamin help us age better?
Discover the essential role of Vitamin K and its Dependent Proteins (VKDPs) in cell repair and the mitigation of ageing.
As we accumulate cellular damage, repair systems become vital. Vitamin K and key VKDPs, such as GAS6 and Protein S, fulfil crucial functions:
💡 Key Mechanisms:
- Silent Cell Clearance: They enable the clearance of dysfunctional cells without triggering inflammatory responses.
- Damage Response Regulation: They contribute to tissue repair and regeneration and regulate inflammation.
- Fibrosis and Organ Damage: The GAS6/ProS-TAM system constitutes an essential component in the adult tissue damage response. Furthermore, the GAS6/AXL axis is implicated in fibrotic responses of the liver and heart (e.g., in heart failure).
Boost Your Health: Although deficiencies are uncommon, it has been proposed to increase Vitamin K intake in older people to improve bone health, prevent vascular calcification, and enhance these repair mechanisms. Remember that spinach and other green leafy vegetables are natural sources of this important micronutrient.
Find out more about this potential, which is still under exploration, with Dr Pablo García de Frutos, an expert researcher in the Haemostasis and Immunity Group at IIBB-CSIC.
