Chateando con la Ciencia: Who said it was waste? The role of Chemistry in Circular Economy – José María Fraile – Thursday 16 March
On Thursday 16th March, at 19:00h, a new session of the VII edition of the Cycle of colloquiums “Chateando con la Ciencia“, organised by the Real Zaragoza Club de Tenis in collaboration with the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute, INMA (CSIC-University of Zaragoza) will take place with the conference entitled “Who said it was a waste? The role of Chemistry in Circular Economy”, to be given by José María Fraile Dolado, CSIC Research Scientist at the Instituto de Síntesis Química y Catálisis Homogénea (ISQCH), a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza.
Abstract: The finite resources of the planet make it necessary to adopt a circular economy model, in which most of the waste can be used as raw materials in other processes, thus prolonging its useful life. This would be a context of industrial symbiosis, in which chemistry would play a fundamental role. In this talk, two examples of research projects for the transformation of chemical waste from industrial and renewable sources will be presented. In the first of these, work is being carried out on the transformation of waste from lindane production, which represents a huge environmental and health risk. The aim is to find a simple, effective, environmentally benign and low-cost method for the transformation of such waste into useful products in the chemical industry. The second project, an industrial collaboration, is working on circularity in the agricultural sector, in different aspects. On the one hand, the improvement of the circularity of the nitrogen cycle in slurry in order to use it more efficiently in fertilisers, thus reducing the inclusion of nitrates in its formulation. On the other hand, work is being carried out on the combination of waste from different sectors (paper, meat, batteries) for the development of systems for the supply of micronutrients in new generation fertilisers.
