Chateando con la Ciencia: Irene Lucas, INMA researcher

Nanoscience: when the small changes the world

The lecture series Chateando con la Ciencia (“Chatting with Science”), organised by the Real Zaragoza Tennis Club with the collaboration of the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute (INMA), continues its eleventh edition with a talk by Professor Irene Lucas del Pozo. Under the title “Nanoscience: when the small changes the world”, the researcher offers a tour of a field that is already part of our everyday lives, often without our realising it.

What happens when we shrink a material down to the nanoscale? Why can the same material behave in completely different ways when its dimensions are reduced to just a few nanometres? The talk will explain why working at such small scales is so fascinating, review current and future applications in areas such as medicine, food, energy and electronics, and show how nanomaterials are made and how their atomic and nanometric structure determines their properties. Particular attention will be paid to functional oxides and the devices that can be developed from them, including applications in emerging fields such as spintronics, which has the potential to transform the electronics of the future.

Irene Lucas, born in Madrid, studied Physics at the Complutense University of Madrid, where she completed her doctoral thesis in collaboration with the National Institute for Aerospace Technology. She is Professor of Materials Physics at the University of Zaragoza and a researcher at INMA. Her work focuses on functional materials and heterostructures at the nanoscale, with particular interest in their magnetic, electronic and spintronic properties, and in potential applications in energy storage, memories, transistors and neuromorphic computing. She is also very active in science outreach, aimed at students and non-specialist audiences.

The lecture can be followed by videoconference, with access restricted to 100 participants. Those wishing to attend should request an access code from palacio@unizar.es.
