Chateando con la Ciencia: Javier Ibáñez Pereda, del I3A

Title: Chatting with the brain: Neural interfaces to study and modulate movement

Is it possible to ‘read’ our brain activity without the need for surgery? In this session of the 10th ‘Chateando con la Ciencia’ Lecture Series, we will discover how our muscles function as an open window to the nervous system.

About the talk: Through the analysis of muscle activity (EMG) and motor units, current technology makes it possible to decode neural signals for revolutionary applications. During the encounter, we will explore how these advances allow for:

  • The natural control of robotic prostheses.
  • The creation of new forms of human-machine interaction.
  • The development of non-invasive methods to diagnose and treat neurological disorders affecting motor control.

The speaker: The session will be led by Jaime Ibáñez Pereda, a Professor at the University of Zaragoza and researcher at the Aragon Institute of Engineering Research (I3A). Dr Ibáñez leads a research laboratory focused on neural interfaces and is a member of the Young Academy of Spain, boasting a distinguished international career at institutions such as Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), and the CSIC.
