INMA seminar given by Charles Downing, from the University of Exeter: “An introduction to quantum batteries”
Date: October 15, 2025, 09:30
Venue: Salón de Grados, Facultad de Ciencias (A), Campus San Francisco
Summary:
Quantum energy science is rapidly emerging as an influential domain interested in the generation, transfer and storage of energy at the quantum level. In particular, quantum batteries (quantum objects which can store and release energy on demand) have the scope to exploit the wonders of quantum mechanics in order to boost their performance as compared to their electrochemical counterparts. This has led to much excitement in the quantum technology community and widespread coverage in the popular media.
In this introductory talk, I will discuss the history, theoretical progress and experimental state of the art in the field of quantum batteries from both a quantum energetic and quantum thermodynamic point-of-view. I will finish by discussing some interesting open research questions surrounding quantum batteries and I will be happy to collaborate in this area with anyone interested.
