De Copas con Ciencia: María Bernechea & Rafael Navarro
Beer and the human eye as webcam this month in “De Copas con Ciencia”
On Wednesday, March 20, there will be a new session of “De copas con ciencia” which, on this occasion, focuses on the world of beer, its ingredients and its characteristics such as color and temperature. In addition, we will delve into the world of vision and its resemblance or not with a webcam.
De copas con ciencia is an initiative that aims to satisfy the scientific curiosity of the population in a relaxed, entertaining and fun way, in leisure time, bringing it to the bars. The activity is aimed at the entire population with scientific curiosity, without the need for specific training in science, and aims to be a meeting point for science lovers, so as to facilitate the creation of scientific debates between experts and the general population.
The activity is organized by the research institutes, ISQCH (Institute of Chemical Synthesis and Homogeneous Catalysis) and INMA (Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon) both joint centers of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza, and will be repeated periodically on the last Thursday of each month, although this time because of Easter is brought forward to the penultimate Wednesday. During these sessions, topics related to chemistry, nanotechnology and materials science will be discussed.
The next session with free admission will take place on March 20 at 20:00 pm in El Sótano Mágico, Calle San Pablo 43, Zaragoza (http://elsotanomagico.com/) and will feature researchers, Maria Bernechea and Rafael Navarro Belsué, researchers at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragon, INMA.
- Last night a DJ talked to me about science… with a beer in her hand – María Bernechea
We love coming to the Magic Basement to “De Copas con Ciencia” to have a good time, meet friends and learn some science, but you can’t deny that accompanying it with beer enhances the experience. However, how much do you know about this drink? How many ingredients are needed to brew a beer? The colder the beer, the better? Blonde, roasted or black? Does the color indicate the alcohol content? Do you have an answer to all these questions? On Wednesday, March 20, we will find out.
María Bernechea holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of La Rioja. She is currently an ARAID researcher at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA), CSIC-University of Zaragoza. Her research focuses on the development of nanomaterials for use in clean processes and energies.
- Is the human eye a cheap webcam? – Rafael Navarro Belsué
Almost 90% of the information received by our brain enters through the eyes, hence its enormous importance. The retina is made up of specialized neurons (pixels, etc.) directly connected to the brain and despite its great limitations, the eyes provide us with a great service in our daily lives.
Rafael Navarro Belsué is Research Professor at ICMA (UNIZAR-CSIC). Previously he worked at the Instituto de Óptica in Madrid where he was director. His research lines are Visual Optics and Human and Artificial Vision, in which he has published more than 100 articles in international journals with a high impact (more than 4000 citations).
The session will be complemented with a face-to-face Hi Score Science contest aimed at the general public that will reward the scientific knowledge acquired by those attending the session.
Hi Score Science is a game of questions and answers about science, in Spanish and English, with versions in French and Basque, for mobile devices, iOS and Android and for Linux, Windows and iOS, which is developed between the two research institutes, the ISQCH and INMA, which allows to include explanations of the scientific reality behind each of the answers. The game can be downloaded for free and without advertising at Apple Store https://goo.gl/q1NjKy and Play Store: https://goo.gl/GgWq6N and for Windows, iOS and Linux at www.HiScoreScience.org. In addition, the application allows users to participate in the project by sending us their own questions through a web page enabled for this purpose www.hiscorescience.org.
