Seminars of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics: Ana Espinosa

Seminars of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics – “Multifunctional therapies based on magnetic and photoactivated nanoparticles” – Ana Espinosa

On 31 March a new session of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics Seminars of the University of Zaragoza will be held by Ana Espinosa, researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid, ICMM (CSIC), who will give a lecture entitled: “Multifunctional therapies based on magnetic and photoactivated nanoparticles”.

Summary: Nanoparticles are used as heating sources in magnetic and photo-induced hyperthermia therapies for effective treatment of oncological diseases in biomedicine. Interestingly, therapeutic effects have been observed even when there is no visible increase in macroscopic temperature due to localized heating of the nanoparticles. Assessing the initiation of thermal doses and quantifying potential side effects resulting from high local temperatures, such as damage to healthy cells in tissue, is crucial when evaluating the local heating effects produced at the surface of nanoparticles. In this work, we examine the efficacy of global and local heating effects under magneto- and photo- thermal effects, in combination with other therapeutic methods, in various biological environments.

The session will take place on Friday 31 March at 12.30 p.m. in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Zaragoza.

The series of Seminars of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics has the collaboration of the IInstituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Zaragoza.
