Conference given by Manuel Vázquez Villalabeita at Ibercaja Patio de la Infanta
“Una inclusión en lo pequeño: magnetismo en el siglo XXI”
On Wednesday, 9 March 2022, at 19:00 hours will take place, in the facilities of the Patio de la Infanta (Obra social de Ibercaja, c/ San Ignacio de Loyola 16), the third conference of the cycle “Algunos retos actuales de la Física”, organised by the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas, Químicas y Naturales de Zaragoza together with the Fundación Ibercaja, which will deal with “Una incursión en lo pequeño: Magnetismo en el siglo XXI” and will be given by D. Manuel Vázquez Villalabeita, CSIC research professor at the Institute of Materials Science in Madrid.
Magnetic phenomena have attracted considerable attention from their first observations in antiquity to the present day, being used in the most diverse applications both in very high precision equipment to detect weak magnetic fields, as well as in everyday life.
In this talk, a descriptive introduction to these phenomena is given, and in particular the different families of magnetic materials which, due to their specific properties, are currently used on a daily basis are presented, with special emphasis on the open problems and the strategies to solve them. A current overview of the most significant advances in magnetic phenomena in the small, meso- and nanoscale realm, as well as the detection of magnetic phenomena on the time scale, is presented. This description is illustrated with examples such as biomagnetic functionalisation, for energy saving with new families of permanent magnets or magnetocaloric materials, or in spintronics for new information storage techniques.
SPEAKER:
Manuel Vázquez Villalabeitia is Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the Institute of Materials Science in Madrid, where he joined in 1989. Previously he was Associate Professor at the University of León and Full Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has also been visiting professor at different universities such as the Federal University of Pernanbuco, Recife, Brazil, the Federal University of the Urals, Ekaterinburg, Russia, and Hubei University, Wuhan, China.
Founder of the Spanish Magnetics Club in 2002, he was its president between 2006 and 2008 and, in 2007, he promoted the creation of the Spanish chapter of the IEEE Magnetics Society. President in 2017-2018 and “Distinguished Services Award” in 2021 of the IEEE Magnetic Society for strengthening the scope of this society worldwide.
In 2001 he founded the group “Nanomagnetism and Magnetization processes” at the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Madrid and has been director of the Instituto de Magnetismo Aplicado (UCM-RENFE-CSIC) between 1992 and 2000.
