Mónica Burriel is a CSIC Research Professor at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragon (INMA) in Zaragoza, Spain. She received her PhD in Materials Science from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2007, with her research conducted at the Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC). She also holds an Habilitation degree from Grenoble Alpes University (2021). Her international career includes postdoctoral positions at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), Imperial College London (UK), and the Catalonia Energy Research Institute (IREC). In 2015, Mónica joined the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) as a Research Scientist at the Laboratoire des Matériaux et du Génie Physique (LMGP) in Grenoble, where she was promoted to Research Director in 2023. In January 2026, she joined INMA (CSIC / University of Zaragoza) as a CSIC Research Professor, while on leave from the CNRS.
She is currently Editor for the Journal Solid State Ionics and European councilor for the international Society for Solid State Ionics (ISSI).
Prof. Burriel possesses extensive expertise in the interplay between structure, microstructure, and composition and their influence on the functional properties of oxide thin films. Her research specializes in the advanced synthesis of thin films through both chemical and physical vapor deposition techniques, with a focus on optimizing electronic and ionic transport. Her work focuses on advanced materials for electrochemical energy conversion, including Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) and Electrolysers (SOECs), as well as on the design of memristive devices for next-generation resistive switching memories and neuromorphic computing systems. Furthermore, she has recently led the development of the novel Isotope Exchange Raman Spectroscopy (IERS) technique for advanced materials characterization.
