INMA Impulso seminar: Polymeric biomaterials for controlled release of drugs and tissue engineering – María Rosa Aguilar de Armas
On Friday 19 April will be a new session of the conference series INMA-Impulse, a series of conferences that seeks to bring the most cutting-edge research to society.
The next session, entitled “Polymeric biomaterials for controlled drug release and tissue engineering”, will be given by Dr. Maria Rosa Aguilar de Armas, Institute of Science and Technology of Polymers, ICTP-CSIC, Madrid.
Summary of the talk:
The ICTP Biomaterials Group develops polymeric biomaterials as anti-cancer, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and pro-regenerating systems for the treatment of cancer, inflammatory diseases, to alleviate the side effects of antiproliferative drugs or to treat compromised wounds, among other biomedical applications. In the case of controlled drug release systems, we prepare them by bottom-up arpoximation starting from bioactive molecules of interest, to generate polymeric drugs with controlled microstructure and that generate particles with surface chemistry and hydrodynamic properties suitable for their active delivery, and through biological barriers in a precise way. Thus, we have developed nanoparticles with photothermal and photodynamic properties, antioxidant and anti-apoptotic nanoparticles capable of reaching the inner ear, or with anti-inflammatory activity to treat osteoarthritis or with specific activity against tumour stem cells. In the case of tissue engineering scaffolds, we develop them from hydrophilic polymers using gelation and cryogelation techniques. The gels, biomimetics of the extracellular matrix, are combined with bioactive molecules that favour the proliferation and differentiation of cells of interest.
