SUMMARY:Chateando con la Ciencia: María José Alonso, from University of Santiago de Compostela
DESCRIPTION:Conference «El ARN: terapias y vacunas para salvar vidas » with María José alonso\nJoin us for a new session of the X Ciclo de Conferencias «Chateando con la Ciencia», orgaanized by The Real Zaragoza Club de Tenis y el Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón.\nAbout the talk: With COVID-19, vaccines marked a paradigm shift in how we prevent infectious diseases, although, as is often the case, there was some resistance in certain quarters. The development of these RNA-based vaccines is not a recent phenomenon, as they build on earlier groundbreaking contributions, such as those made by Nobel Prize in Medicine laureate Severo Ochoa.\nToday, RNA therapies and vaccines are here to stay. They have saved millions of lives and are improving many others, especially in fields such as cancer and rare diseases. In particular, Prof. MJ Alonso’s contribution to this field focuses on the design of nanocarriers—systems that protect RNA molecules and precisely direct them to target cells.\nAmong the most significant aspects of these technologies are:\n• RNA vaccines teach the body to defend itself against infectious agents.\n• RNA-based therapies act on the molecular origin of the disease, allowing genetic errors to be corrected and pathologies to be treated at their root cause, not just to alleviate their symptoms.\n• RNA molecules and their nanocarriers, already on the market, have proven to be safe, effective, and scalable for industrial production.\nThese technologies open up a very promising path toward new cell therapies and advances in synthetic biology. RNA therapies represent, in short, one of the most significant biomedical revolutions of our time.\nEl ponente: The talk will be given by Mª José Alonso, Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology and Director of the Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology Laboratory at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC).\nEvent Detalis:\n\nDate: Thursday, 18 de junio de 2026.\nTime: 07:00 p.m.\nFormat: Video-conferencia.\n\nRegistration: Attendance is free, but prior registration is required. You must request your access code by sending an email to palacio@unizar.es before June 17.\nNote: Access to the platform is limited to 100 participants.\n \nEvent poster\n
