DESCRIPTION:Chateando con la Ciencia: «Climate change and possible future climates»\nOn Thursday 16th May a new session of the VIII edition of the Cycle of talks  “Chateando con la Ciencia” will take place, organised by the Real Zaragoza Tennis Club with the collaboration of the Aragon Nanoscience and Materials Institute, INMA, a joint institute of the CSIC and the University of Zaragoza with the conference of José Manuel Gutiérrez Llorente, CSIC Research Professor at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria who will give a talk titled: Climate change and possible future climates.\nSummary of the talk:\nThe successive climate change reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provide a comprehensive assessment of their physical basis and include key findings on the current state of the climate, future climate scenarios and mitigation pathways needed to limit future climate change. The latest report has included the regional approach, which has required a critical assessment on regional changes of different climate parameters and regionalisation methodologies.\nThis talk will present an overview of the current state of knowledge, with special emphasis on regional aspects and methodological limitations, and will introduce the Interactive Atlas, a new IPCC tool that supports and communicates the regional assessment. This information allows us to visualise and understand the changes in our possible future climates, depending on the actions we take during this decade.\nJosé Manuel Gutiérrez Llorente holds a PhD in Science from the University of Cantabria. Since 2009 he has been a CSIC research professor at the Institute of Physics of Cantabria (where he was director from 2019-2023) and leads a research group in climate and data science. Between 1997 and 2008 he was a lecturer in the Dept. of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Cantabria. His research activity initially focused on non-linear physics and machine learning. Subsequently, he began to collaborate with the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in the analysis and prediction of regional climate variability and, in particular, regional climate change. He has made numerous contributions, especially in the field of regionalisation (downscaling) of climate predictions and projections. He has published more than 150 scientific articles with thousands of citations and has been principal investigator (and coordinator) of numerous national and European research projects and contracts with organisations such as FAO and Copernicus. He is the coordinator of the CSIC Climate and Climate Services Platform, an ambitious initiative that integrates the CSIC’s potential in this field.\nHe is currently involved in several international initiatives on regionalisation in seasonal forecasting and climate change projections, including the international initiatives CORDEX, where he is a member of the Science Advisory Team, and the IPCC, where he has been Coordinating Lead Author (CLA) of the latest IPCC report (AR6) coordinating the WGI Atlas and the Interactive Atlas; he is also responsible for the CSIC node that supports the IPCC through the IPCC Data Distribution Center (IPCC-DDC).\nThe talk will be offered on-line.
