DESCRIPTION:Chateando con la Ciencia: «Nuclear fusion as an inexhaustible source of energy: manufacturing stars on Earth» – Thursday 15th December\nOn Thursday 15th December a new session of the VII edition of the Cycle of talks «Chateando con la Ciencia» will take place, organised by the Real Zaragoza Club de Tenis with the collaboration of the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón, INMA (CSIC-University of Zaragoza) with the lecture by Eleonora Viezzer, Professor of Physics and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Physics at the University of Seville.\nAbstract: Is there a clean and practically inexhaustible source of energy? The answer is yes: the stars. Is it possible to reproduce this source on Earth and thus have a clean and inexhaustible energy supply? The answer is: we are working on it. This is perhaps the greatest technological challenge that mankind can face.\nTo this end, the experimental nuclear fusion reactor ITER in Cadarache (France) is being built, a crucial step in the development of this technology and the penultimate step before commercial fusion.\nIn this talk, Prof. Viezzer will show us the basics of nuclear fusion and the latest advances in this technology.\nEleonora Viezzer holds a degree in Physics from the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität (LMU) in Munich (Germany) and a PhD from the same university with a doctoral thesis developed at the Max Plank Institute for Plasma Physics. She is currently Full Professor in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Seville and co-director of the Plasma Physics and Fusion Technologies group at the same University.\nShe has led, and leads, as principal investigator, a large number of international research projects and coordinates several experiments at nuclear fusion facilities, some with experimental groups of more than 100 scientists. She is a regular collaborator of several of the reference laboratories in plasma physics (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Plasma Physics Laboratory at Princeton University, MIT Fusion Center in Boston, Joint European Tokamak (JET) at Oxford University, to name a few). In recent years, his scientific activity has won him numerous awards. In particular, in 2022 she received the Scientific Research Award of the Princess of Girona Foundation and the Prize of the Spanish Royal Society of Physics.
